The birth of democracies owes much to the interventions and mobilizations of ordinary people. However many experience as though they take inherited democratic institutions which do not deliver for the people – that a rigid democratic procedure has been imposed from higher up, with increasing numbers of people feeling left out or left backside. In this well-researched volume, leading political sociologist Donatella della Porta rehabilitates the role social movements have long played in fostering and deepening democracy, especially focusing on progressive movements of the Left which have sought to broaden the plurality of voices and cognition in democratic debate. Bridging social motion studies and autonomous theory, della Porta investigates contemporary innovations in times of crisis, peculiarly those in the direction of participatory and deliberative practices – 'crowd-sourced constitutions', referendums from below and motility parties – and reflects on the potential and limits of such alternative politics. In a moment in which concerns increase for the potential disruption of a Corking Regression led by xenophobic movements and parties, the cases and analyses of resistance in this volume offering important cloth for students and scholars of political sociology, political scientific discipline and social move studies.

This book proposes a radical new style of thinking about our autonomous future, our ecological survival, and our means to keep economies fair. It shows that adopting upper limits to wealth and income; replacing elections with local straight democracy and legal duty involving randomly selected citizens; and replacing welfare and redistribution policies with pre-distribution and reparations promises new solutions to political apathy, discontent, manipulation, economic inequality, unfairness, diff opportunities, and looming ecological disaster.

The contributors to this volume explore how non-Western, pluriversal approaches to cadre questions in the social sciences and humanities can help to dramatically rethink the human relationship between knowledge and power.

In Decolonizing the Social Sciences and the Humanities Bernd Reiter contributes to the ongoing efforts to decolonize the social sciences and humanities, by arguing that true decolonization implies a liberation from the elite culture that Western civilization has perpetually promoted. Reiter brings together lessons learned from field research on a Colombian indigenous society, a maroon society, also in Colombia, from Afro-Brazilian religion, from Spanish Anarchism, and from German Council democracy, and from analyzing non-Western ontologies and epistemologies in full general. He claims that in one case these lessons are absorbed, it becomes articulate that Western civilization has advanced individualization and elitism. The chapters present the case that human beings are able to rule themselves, and have done then for some 300,000 years, before the Neolithic Revolution. Self-dominion and rule by councils is our default selection in one case nosotros rid ourselves of leaders and rulers. Reiter concludes by considering the massive manipulations and the heinous divisions that political elitism, dressed in the class of representative democracy, has brought united states of america, and implores us to seek true freedom and commonwealth by liberating ourselves from political elites and taking on political responsibilities. Decolonizing the Social Sciences and the Humanities is written for students, scholars, and social justice activists beyond cultural anthropology, folklore, geography, Latin American Studies, Africana Studies, and political science.
